Attention Pregnant Mamas, FOUR tips to get a stellar newborn photo session!

You're expecting a baby - congratulations! Take a moment to just embrace your pregnancy and relax. Now more than ever, your to-do list may feel long but you've got 40 weeks, so no worries mama! I am here to help you with some newborn photo session prep and tips so your mind will be set at ease. Lets get started!

Find your newborn photographer + get scheduled for the newborn session!

I'm sure if your city is anything like Metro Detroit, there are several amazing newborn photographers to pick from! While there are many factors that play in to who you select (style, experience, location, quality, budget, etc) that is for a different post. But after you determine which photographer you are going to book, be sure to get on their calendar right away. I book my newborn clients based on their due date, so I have an idea of roughly when they'll be born and have it on my schedule.

Have a vision for the session + communicate with your photographer

Do you like posed newborn photos or lifestyle? Do you like fully wrapped baby photos or seeing the baby's rolls and bum? If you're not sure, take a look at your photographer's gallery to get an idea of your preference and let them know! Your newborn photographer will WANT to know what you like and don't like!

Get ready to relax

Wait, what?! Yes, I definitely did say that. Newborn sessions are typically 2-3 hours, as there is extra time in there for calming baby, feeding baby, cleaning up any messes and so forth. When you hire a professional newborn photographer, we do all the work. All you need to do is provide the milk for baby and then set back and relax! No joke, I've had mamas catch a few minutes of shuteye on my studio couch before. There's no shame in that!

Some expectations during the session

Baby will cry during the session. Don't feel bad or panic! During my newborn sessions, I have tons of tricks up my sleeve to calm baby. I'm not sleep deprived and I love newborn cuddles! Plus I've had two of my own. ;)

Your newborn will eat during the session. Within my own studio, I give mamas privacy to feed baby so they are comfortable. I also request they feed baby at the beginning of the session because full baby = sleepy, happy baby.

Baby will pee during the session, and possibly on the photographer - it is part of the job! Don't feel embarrassed about it! After each of my newborn sessions, all of my props, wraps and attire get cleaned.

Newborn photography studios are very warm (80 degrees) to keep baby sleepy and comfortable, especially with those unwrapped poses. Dress comfortably and in layers so you can cool down if you need to.

Likely your newborn photographer will also provide you with a more extensive prep guide for all of their specifics! I hope this post helped you feel at ease to get it booked and know that you'll have a wonderful experience. You'll be so, so glad that you took the time for newborn photos! Enjoy your pregnancy and this upcoming stage of life as you expand your family!

Chelsie
